In 2018 we were commissioned to paint three large murals to fill the arches to the front of the village hall in Chidham, Chichester in West Sussex. The village wanted to celebrate the local area with its wealth of farming traditions – the glorious golden wheat fields and the abundance of watercress. Also the area is renowned for its coastal beauty and its local well loved sailing clubs. The murals had to be of a simple design but they needed to be eye-catching.
We decided to design each of the panels using a simple but striking motif to represent each of the subjects that the local community had chosen. The middle arch depicts a yachting scene typically seen in Chichester harbor. The adjacent arches illustrate crops from the surrounding countryside – watercress and wheat. Painted and glazed onto frost proof tiles made in out our Cotswold pottery the panels will last for generations to come and hopefully bring a little cheer each time the locals pass.
