Last year we were fortunate to be given the contract to create forty free-standing tiled street signs for the borough of Camden in London.
The project consisted of replacing the old tiled signs that were framed in simple wooden frames with signs that were more durable and would stand the test of time. We already made tiles with the original Victorian font that were fully frost proof and tested to BS and EU standards. The challenge was to encase the tiles in frames that were not going to rot. We decided to make the frames using powder coated aluminium which were sure would be long-lasting.
To make the frames light and sturdy enough to take the weight of the tiles we used light weight aluminium sheeting with the borders folded in on themselves. This required a local firm of metal fabricators to design and manufacture each of the signs to a specific size.
The tiles were made by us in our studio pottery here in the Cotswolds and then fixed into the frames using a method which we are keeping strictly under wraps! Epoxy grout was used to surround the tiles for maximum protection and longevity.
The tiles are slowly being erected in London and we have high hopes that they will become a firm favorite in other boroughs throughout the country!
